I was listening to a podcast recently and I cannot dismiss how I resonated with this line
“Your first job is what makes you.”
My first job was at an FMCG, I learnt so much during my stint here. I was in the Marketing Communication department. As an IT student, I was also assigned to maintain the Unilever website.
I learned about PR, Crisis Management, Event Planning and Management, CSR and more. It was a really fun space. Met many cool people and some are even my close friends till today.
Would I say life was easier than? Nah. Not really. Perhaps commitment was less. The energy was pretty high. But has my work excitement and quality dropped? Hell no!
It was such a great place to learn. The skillsets that I gained during my time here is priceless! I had such an amazing superior. All the bosses were friendly and knowledgeable.
I truly believe that everybody should at least start their career by working for others be it an organization or an immediate superior. Why? Because it gives you a chance to learn things such as the below :
– expectation management
-time management
– interpersonal skills
– people management
– budgeting (both for work and personal)
After I left Unilever, that’s when I stepped into the world of Advertising. I sold my soul to the devil. Haha. I love, love the rush. The deadlines. The brainstorming. The campaigns and so forth. I left my favourite team where I rose to my potential to be my own boss. I’m still in advertising but on my own.
I’m fortunate and blessed to have been working on my own for many years. I really love my job. I do. It might be a challenge at times. But I’m so blessed to do what I do. Plus perseverance is key! The entrepreneurship life is not for the faint-hearted.
