Earth Hour 2009, for the first time ever Malaysia will be joining this worldwide celebrated event.

Earth Hour aims to demonstrate unprecedented solidarity and provide a visual global mandate that will put the heat on world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009 to strike a new global deal on climate change.

Earth Hour started two years back in Sydney, Australia. It is an initiative to create awareness amongst public on the issues of global warming. To date, 74 cities from 62 countries have made a pledge to switch off for the WWF’s Earth Hour. Earth Hour happens every last Saturday of March.

Earth Hour is about taking simple steps everyday that collectively reduce carbon emissions – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

For a better understanding and a bigger picture of global warming do watch Al Gore’s The Inconvenient Truth. Look at how bad the earth is and what are we doing to save it? Nothing?

Let’s start small everyone. Taking the first step is as easy as turning off a light.

A simple flick to switch off unused electricity such as ligths, fans and any electrical products. For this one solid hour that we are projecting this year which is the 28th March 2009, let’s switch off the the lights to reduce the carbon emissions. It’s that simple. Electricity releases a large amount of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide increases the temperature of the earth which causes global warming. It’s as simple as that. So please do not waste electricity and heating up the earth.

Let’s come together and unite as Malaysian, 28 March 2009 8.30pm till 9.30pm.

Do visit http://www.earthhour.org.my and sign up. Show that Malaysians are united.

Some facts for you.

Climate Change Q & A

What is climate change?

Climate change refers to the long-term and significant change in global weather patterns such as rainfall, temperature and wind. The climate of the Earth has changed many times in the past due to natural causes. However, huge and rapid increases of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere caused by modern activities are threatening climate stability by raising temperatures beyond normal natural fluctuations.

 What are greenhouse gases?

Greenhouse gases are naturally occurring gases in the atmosphere that absorb radiation from the sun and therefore trap heat to warm the Earth. This is known as the “greenhouse effect”. Without the greenhouse effect, the planet would be too cold to support life as we know it. The most common greenhouse gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

The increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activities lead to more heat being trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere and therefore raising the global temperature. The atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane in 2005 far exceed the natural range over the last 650,000 years!

What’s the difference between global warming and climate change?

Although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing. Global warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere whereas climate change refers to the changes in climate (e.g. more severe storms, prolonged droughts, etc.) that may occur as a result this temperature increase.

How do we know that climate change is happening?

Out of the 12 warmest years on record, 11 of them occurred between 1995 – 2006. It is likely that the last 100 years were the warmest century in the last millennium.

Most glaciers in the Northern hemisphere are in retreat and records show that the Arctic sea-ice has thinned by about 40% in recent decades during the summer months. Sea levels have risen by 10-20cm due to expansion (water expands when warmed) and additional release of water due to the melting of Arctic ice.

What are the impacts of climate change?

Current climate scenarios project that global temperatures could increase between 1 – 5.8°C by year 2100 and this could be accompanied by a sea level rise of 13 – 94 cm.  These changes in temperature are predicted to result in more severe storm events, droughts, heat waves and flooding in various parts of the world. Low lying coastal areas and islands will be permanently lost to rising sea waters.

Climate change is also expected to increase the spread of infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever by extending the distribution range of disease carrying organisms. The changing weather patterns could also negatively impact agricultural yield and thereby threatening global food security. The Earth’s biodiversity is not safe either as a projected 40 – 70% of species would be at risk of extinction.

Increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as cyclones, storms and flooding would not only lead to loss of lives but also high economic losses from infrastructure damage, disruption of livelihoods and displacement of communities.

What human activities contribute to climate change?

Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas resulting from human activities and is released in huge amounts through the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) for energy production. Other activities such as agriculture, industry, transport and deforestation also contribute to significant greenhouse gas emissions. Even our waste in landfills emits greenhouse gas in the form of methane.

How much greenhouse gas does the average Malaysian emit?

According to a recent report by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), Malaysia is the 26th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. We emit 7.5 gigatonnes per capita compared to 3 gigatonnes in 1990, registering the highest growth rate among the world’s top 30 emitters. The transport and industry sectors were the main emission contributors.

What can we do about climate change?

It is widely believed that when we reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, we reduce the rate and impacts of climate change by slowing down the increase of global average temperatures. As an individual we can do our bit to address climate change by re-evaluating our lifestyle choices. The average Malaysian wastes 6 times more energy than the average Japanese.

Simple things like not wasting electricity, choosing energy efficient appliances, taking public transport and reducing and recycling waste can make a difference.

Here are ten different ways to spend Earth Hour and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions:

1. Gather family & friends for a night picnic.
2. Dine in one of the many Earth Hour participating restaurants by candlelight.
3. Organise a family night playing board games.
4. Throw an Earth Hour street party with your neighbours.
5. Arrange a house party lit by torches.
6. Take the dog for a night walk.
7. Hand write a letter to loved one by lantern.
8. Sit in the dark and share stories.
9. Read a book using a book light.
10. Share a romantic night in with your loved one.

She Turns 82

March 21 2009, my grandma who I call tok turned 82. Long life to you tok.

The real plan was to gather the whole family and have a dinner together. Since, everybody had their own agenda yet again. My dad decided to treat my tok on a dinner of our own. It was just my dad, my mum, my brothers, my aunty and myself. We went to one of my favourite restaurants which is Pakeeza. Later on we had a shopping spree at Ikea and a little coffee session for supper.

I really love the food at Pakeeza and I would only bring people that I truly care about to this place. The price is reasonable with very good service and good ambiance. I have been coming to this place since I was still in primary school. That’s long.

Well back to my tok. It’s really fun having her around. Though she mostly stays with my aunty. When she comes to visit us, she’d be my roomie. It’s nice having her at home. She loves watching the TV. That’s what she enjoys doing nowadays. She’d watch all her favourite shows and then go down and suggest some super scrumptious meals for my maid to cook. In the late afternoon, she’d come back up and watch a bit of TV and get a power nap. She’d then go down and have tea in the garden with my mum.

Isn’t her life just relaxing. I wish I could just relax and have a lifestyle like her’s ;p

I love my tok dearly. She’s the only elderly person left in the family. My grandparents on my father’s side has passed away when I was pretty young and my grandfather on my mother’s side passed on a few years back. So, while I still have my tok, I will spend as much quality time as I can with her.

My tok loves talking to me before she goes to bed. She’d talk about the shows that she watches and ask me about my work, my life, my friends and many more. She will always ask me about this one particular person who isn’t family yet dear to her. I have no idea why and I never asked her in depth why she always ask about him. But I will tell her what I know if she ask me.

I will never ever forget a conversation I had with her on the telephone on the 11 February 2007. It was so touching and it moved me. I cried when she gave me those beautiful advices. Til this very day I still hold on to what she said to me.

She told me to be patient in life and that at times people might not know what is best for me. Always to have faith in yourself and if I think it’s right hold on to it. Fight for what I want and what I believe. She also said that “He’s a great young man”.

Basically, follow your heart. If you love someone, don’t let others come in between you no matter what.

I love you tok. Always and forever.

Save Me

I am drowning in my own pool of tears. Could you please come and save me? I don’t remember how to swim. I have lost my sense. I have lost my balance and my ability to float. Somebody save me.

Lenka – Don’t Let Me Fall

A song am currently listening to on and on. On top of my lungs am singing. Great lyrics.

Don’t Let Me Fall by Lenka

Underneath the moon,
Underneath the stars
Heres a little heart for you
Up above the world,
Up above it all
Heres a hand to hold on to

But if I should break,
If I should fall away
What am I to do?
I need someone to take,
A little of the weight
Or I’ll fall through

You’re just the one
That I’ve been waiting for
I’ll give you
All that I have
To give and more
But don’t let me fall

Take a little time,
Walk a little line
Got the balance right
Give a little love,
Gimme just enough
So that I can hang on tight

We will be alright,
I’ll be by your side
I wont let you down
But I gotta know,
No matter how things go
That you will be alright

You’re just the one
That I’ve been waiting for
I’ll give you all
That I have
To give and more
But don’t let me fall

Underneath the moon,
Underneath the stars
Heres a little heart for you
Up above the world,
Up above it all
Heres a hand to hold on to

Your just the one
That I’ve been waiting for
I’ll give you
All that I have
To give and more
But don’t let me fall

You’ll be the one
That I’ll love forever more
I’ll be here holding you
High above it all
But don’t let me fall

Facebook

I have been an active user of Facebook since 2006. I am not shy to admit that I log on to it more than twice a day. Addicted you say? So what, I know you yourself do it. Don’t lie to me and start with all the nonsense of saying I don’t have a life or saying that you aren’t into it as much as I am. But no I can live without it. I did and I can if I want to.

I first got an invitation from my cousin but ignored it. Then another friend asked me to join, my cousin was still asking me to do so. Why not right? What’s the harm ain’t it?

At the time that I started using Facebook, it was still exclusive. It was just made available to overseas students. Yes at that particular time, I was still in QUT.

Facebook was created back in 2004, by a group of Computer Science students at Harvard University. It was first called Facemash then to The Facebook and finally the ever famous Facebook. It was born to connect students of Harvard University then expanded to Yale, Stanford and Columbia. Next up they spread out to Ivy Leagues and the rest was history.

I have a love hate relationship with Facebook. At times I love it for the purpose of marketing my business and sometimes I just hate it. But it’s fun and cool too. It’s an awesome way for me to keep connected with my friends who are scattered all over the world. At least, I get to see how they are, what their up to and so on. I enjoy going through pictures, as pictures tell a thousand words.

Facebook is also a source of entertainment for me. It really is. Going through people’s album and seeing how they act. How they carry themselves. How they comment. How they speak. Seriously, it’s so amusing. You can tell a lot from this.

My particular favourite is how people try to speak and how they try in to blend in within a crowd. It’s funny. Oh yes yes, how can I ever forget. People commenting on them status, without knowing the meaning. Or even if they don’t get the joke. Or if they don’t understand what others are mentioning.

Come on! Please don’t try. Just be true to yourselves.

I know am not listed in KL’s most famous people or someone to stalk or what nots. But I do know that I count as a person. I really don’t try to fit in by being someone am not or putting up a slang or trying to speak like someone else. Other people might have a different vocab and mine might differ. But that’s exactly what makes me, me. I stay true. They may sound cooler but that’s them. Not me.

Another thing interesting about Facebook is the user’s creative in photography. I love to go through the captivating and artistic profile photos. If it’s good, I’d definitely say it is. Hehe. I am such a sucker for great pictures.
A plus point for it would be the Group application. It’s so easy to market a business or an event online. You can notify your customers using it in a breeze. Hehe.

I also notice that some people use Facebook as a form of online social climbing. They have a gazillion friend. Do they really know this entire amount of people? If they do, they should really start campaigning to be the next Mayor or Prime Minister ey. Crazy I tell you.

To conclude this, I really don’t know if I truly hate Facebook or do I madly love Facebook. As for now, it’s amsuingly resourceful. Period.

Leg Shaking

Last weekend, my father treated us to a movie and a scrumptious dinner at Fatty Crab. It’s rather difficult to gather all of us together. Yes, we are still living under the same roof yet this can happen.

So we went to catch Marley & Me and had dinner. During dinner, I saw a young lady seated on her chair with her legs folded on it (bersila on her chair). Not only was she doing this in a restaurant, she shake her legs as she was eating with her folded legs. Oh my, was that bad enough? She continued sewing when she was done with dinner. She did it even when she had her legs on the ground.

She than started talking to her fellow family members and GOD! She was loud. It felt like she was sharing her conversation with everyone there.

What happened to all the young ladies? Have the forgotten their manners? Table ethics?

A note to them guys out there, choose your girls properly. As for you girls, don’t shake your legs when you are seated. It is not a pretty sight.

The Question of Marriage

The topic of marriage popped up during lunch with a friend a few weeks back. Out of nowhere we were discussing this issue. She says now she wants to date man who has the potentials of being her future husband. Good plan babe.

What is the right age to get married? I know most girls who have graduated from university and started their working life will say that it’s high time for marriage. Is this true? Do you all agree on this?

I went around asking a couple of my friends for their opinion. Most said 25-26 is the right age for a woman as this is when they are really fertile. Baby factory ey? As for a man it would be at the age of 27-28. Man need to be older as they are the ones who will be providing for their respective wife and perhaps family.

I am really sorry but I don’t believe in all this. I won’t be pressured to get married at the age of 25. I’d be 25 next year for goodness sake. Who am I to marry then? I won’t just start dating to fulfill the social pressure. I want to be in love, to be able to trust and lean on the man I will be marrying.

Marriage is just no joke to me. It’s life changing. It’s life altering. Marriage comes with great responsibilities as well. Learning to live with another person. Seeing your partner in a different eye. Exploring life together. Exposing quirky habits and weird antiques. Hehe.

I have a list of dreams that I wish to accomplish before I settle down. It’s not that I am so into achievements and what nots. It’s just for my own satisfaction. Truth to be told, I would actually get married at this present moment if the man of my dreams or the man that I love who loves me equally as much were to propose to me this instance. But he would have to let me still continue to achieve my goals. It would be awesome if this were to actually happen, you’d have the man of your dreams supporting you in achieving and fulfilling your dreams. You could do the same for him as well.

If a man and a woman really love one another, they would accept each other’s difference positively and love them for who they are. Remember, opposites attracts. If you and I were to be the same, life would be completely dull.

So tell me, what is your thoughts on marriage? How old? When? How do you know it is the right time?

Disturbed

I have never been this disturbed in my life. I was out with my father. We went to Sg Wang after work as he wanted to purchase his Dopod 838 Pro’s battery. His battery is dying on him. So being the biggest fan of Sg Wang and my love for gadgets, we went together. My father and I are very close. I always talk to him. He is a very knowledgeable man who I can talk to on and on with. When we were coming down the escalator, an idiotic guy said out loudly “Wow, sugar daddy!”. Like what was that for? Can’t he see the resemblence of our face? The same built? Must be a jerk off blind ass guy. Yes, a lot of girls my age do this “sugar daddy” thing. But this is just against my beliefs. I won’t take the easy way out. I will work for what I want and deserve. I want to be in a relationship where both parties love one another. I do not date old man. So next time, before making any assumptions perhaps you could bite your tongue and think twice.
